What Type of Countertop Would You Like in Your Kitchen?

September 26th, 2009

Everyone wants a beautiful looking kitchen. Creating one all begins with your counters.  Countertops are probably the most commonly used aspect of a kitchen, except for maybe your refrigerator.  When it comes to choosing kitchen countertops, there are numerous choices available.  You will be able to pick from many types ranging from marble to soapstone counters depending on what you demand from your kitchen.

There are so many different options and styles available in regards to countertops that it can often be confusing. It can be quite difficult for a homeowner to decide on what type of countertops would be best for them. Would a soapstone countertop be more advantageous over Formica if you cook a lot, for example? There are a lot of questions to ask so don’t get frustrated. Try to have fun with it, instead and use the many resources available to help you with your decision.

There are actually a good amount of questions you need to ask before making a decision on the type of kitchen countertop you are considering before you even contact a contractor.  It is first suggested you put together a budget of what you would like to spend and what you can actually afford.  Think about how much you are willing to spend on materials and how much on labor. Does your kitchen get used frequently with a lot of cooking or is it more of a room for gathering?

Not only will the look of your countertops be of concern, but you will also need to figure out how you will be using the counter, what level of maintenance you will want, and what the cost will be. Think about the type of material you are looking to use. Do you prefer one which is high maintenance or easy maintenance? Now that you have established some of these answers you can then talk with your remodeling contractor about the specific details of the project.

Try to also take into consideration the idea of multiple soapstone countertops.  Not only is this a hot trend in interior design but it also is quite functional.

Before you begin any kitchen remodel project, talk over your options with your contractor since they probably have experience with the many different materials and styles commonly used.  You may be pleasantly surprised how easily they can create the type of look you want most.  If you are looking for a new look for your kitchen, start with a new soapstone countertop for a fabulous new look.

Soapstone, Kitchens and Home Renovations

September 11th, 2009

Kitchens are often the busiest and most used rooms in homes. Many modern families believe that when they have a welcoming and warm kitchen, they tend get much more enjoyment during the time they spend in either preparing meals, interacting together or just enjoying friends and family.

So I’m sure you are wondering why it is called soapstone. The reason for this is because of stone’s feel to the touch. Soapstone has a texture to it that no other construction type stone uses.  In fact, it feels a bit soft. When you rub the surface of a soapstone countertop or soapstone sink, it feels like you are touching a piece of dry soap.  However, despite its soft to the touch feel, soapstone is one of the more durable stones out there. It is easy to see why so many homeowners choose it over marble or granite.

Soapstone is natural rock quarried, much like granite and marble. This stone started forming hundreds of millions of years ago and is found across the world. Soapstone quarries are located in countries as varied as Brazil, Spain, Italy, the United States, and France. Even in the US alone, soapstone can be found across the entire country.

One of the reasons why soapstone is so popular in interior design is its varied and beautiful color patterns. People love putting all things soapstone in their homes. The many natural variations of a soapstone countertop are what give it such unique character. The colors vary from whites and grays to even blue and green. Add to these colors patterns ranging from veins similar to what you see in marble to tiny flecks. No two soapstone counters are the same all thanks to nature and the different patterns it has created.

Soapstone has only recently become popular again as a material for kitchen countertops, sinks and fireplaces. It has been used for centuries in homes and even as a material for sculptures, vases, goblets, urns, and tools. This is exactly why people who opt for soapstone countertops today are those who wish to bring a rustic, Early American feel into their homes.

Whatever style of stone or material you choose to install in your home, be sure to make an informed decision. Kitchen work surfaces and countertops are often the most noticeable aspects of a kitchen. The choice of color and material often dictates the other design aspects of your kitchen, as well.

Bring New Life to Your Kitchen with a Remodel Using Soapstone

September 4th, 2009

Remodeling and home renovation is a great way to bring new life and excitement to your home. No room undergoes changes more so than the kitchen. There are so many different ways you can change up your kitchen but always remember, it is important to keep it user friendly, open and pleasant enough than you feel comfortable in it.

The first thing to consider when remodeling is if you can do it yourself or should you hire a professional contractor. If you are making significant changes to your kitchen such as new wiring or adding a new soapstone countertop, you are probably better off, calling a professional. Contractors can also make sure your remodeling plans fit in with your local building codes. When looking a contractor to handle your kitchen remodel job, shop around to several companies for bids before reaching a final decision.

One of the main reasons given for kitchen remodeling projects is expansion. Kitchen storage, more space using a soapstone counter, and additional pantry space are always common requests, especially in homes with small kitchens.  Expanding a home’s kitchen gives families more room to work in and more importantly, live in. If the kitchen becomes large enough through an expansion, it can accommodate an island made from soapstone slabs.

A kitchen expansion project gives homeowners several different options to go with. You could either to take space from another part the house and add it to the kitchen or expand the actual house itself by adding on to the kitchen. It is important you carefully think about all your options making a choice. Knocking down structural walls or even expanding on the framework of the house can sometimes get expensive.

Think about different ways you can make your kitchen more hospitable. Many homes are adding kitchens which include bars and bar stools for people to sit on and eat casual meals. Some homeowners are going with a more rustic look and adding soapstone. A soapstone countertop looks great when combined with a matching sink and backstop made from this same stone.  It is recommended you create a social area for families and friends to gather but also leave enough room so that they do not interfere with your work space.

Overhead racks are quite popular for the storage of baking pans and cooking pots. These racks move things up and out of the way while leaving them still easily accessible. Try adding more cupboard space than you think you need. Kitchen cupboards have a tendency to fill up much quicker than you think. Use the shelves below your soapstone island to store things, as well.
