Trends in Kitchen Layouts and Designs Using Soapstone

October 20th, 2009

No other room in a house is as busy as the kitchen. That’s a simple fact. They tend to be the focal point of households across the world.  Not only do families cook and eat in the kitchen but it is also a place where we gather to talk and unwind.  Kitchens are where friends and families discuss their lives.

If you spend time in your kitchen doing this and that, you’ll probably prefer it to be not only functional but also uniquely visual. Why not design it to fit the style of you and your family? Whether you prefer cozy ambiance or strict functionality, one thing to always keep in mind is space.

Start by creating a list of problems and things you’d like to change in your kitchen. It can be anything from installing new appliances or creating additional counter space. Is your kitchen lit properly or does it suffer from insufficient lighting? Most of these problems can be fixed with a little bit of hard work, while others require professional help. The size and scope of your project is all dependent on what you desire in a kitchen.

A great place for ideas is home and garden magazines. These are great for seeing the latest trends in kitchen layouts and designs. There are many television shows and websites dedicated to home improvement and interior design to help you decide exactly what you want.

One popular trend is how people are using soapstone this year, especially in soapstone counters. A soapstone countertop can serve many useful purposes. Counters free up valuable space, while also adding a stunning, aesthetic appeal to the feel of the kitchen. A beautiful soapstone counter matched with an island can give off a stylish mood for an evening of entertaining.

People love soapstone counters for several reasons but mostly for its natural color variations. Colors vary from whites and grays to even shades of blue. You can be assured of having a soapstone countertop which is totally unique from any other because of nature’s many different patterns ranging from veins similar to marble or even tiny flecks of colors.

A kitchen is the busiest room in your home. No matter what the occasion may be, it is always full of people eating dinners, enjoying the morning coffee, entertaining guests, or holiday get to gethers.  The kitchen is where major decisions are made and memories are formed. Take your time and plan your renovations wisely.

Create the Perfect Rustic Look with a Soapstone Countertop

October 9th, 2009

Renovating your home begins with an idea. What better place to instill a new design or theme in your home than by changing up your kitchen? A home improvement project involving your kitchen all begins and ends with the type of materials you decide to use, especially when it comes to countertops.

Countertop materials are sold in all varieties and fit within all budgets.  Choosing the right material should come down to the type of lifestyle you live and the tone you want to set in your kitchen. While most people shop for countertop materials based solely on price, you would be pleasantly surprised to find other materials which would look great in your home that you may never have thought of, such as soapstone for example.

One great benefit of soapstone is how it tends to be less expensive than other materials such as granite or marble. The typical homeowner can afford to cover more countertop space with it. Plus other kitchen items can be used in soapstone to match. Soapstone stoves or soapstone sinks can easily be integrated into the total design scheme more cost effectively.

Countertops are simple to maintain and clean when they are constructed from soapstone. Soapstone is extremely stain resistant. When you install a soapstone countertop, this is a very attractive feature, especially if your kitchen is a heavy-use area. Since it does not stain, a soapstone counter does not require a sealer, this alone is a substantial cost savings through the years.

Natural acids found in wines and citrus juices can harm other types of surfaces, but a soapstone countertop remains impervious to these substances. Just a simple wipe with any common household cleaner and your soapstone countertop will be clean and sparkling once again. Thanks to its non-porous quality, a soapstone counter will not harbor any bacteria.

Another quality found in soapstone which makes it perfect for the hardship or a countertop, is that it does not burn. Composed mainly of talc and magnesium, soapstone is naturally flame retardant. A soapstone counter will not be harmed or marked if you set a hot item down on its surface.

Your kitchen has its own unique characteristics. Most kitchens require some changes here and there, especially older homes.  What’s stopping you from touching it up a little and adding that new soapstone counter you’ve always dreamed about? Start planning out the styles and trends you think would look best in your home today.

What Type of Countertop Would You Like in Your Kitchen?

September 26th, 2009

Everyone wants a beautiful looking kitchen. Creating one all begins with your counters.  Countertops are probably the most commonly used aspect of a kitchen, except for maybe your refrigerator.  When it comes to choosing kitchen countertops, there are numerous choices available.  You will be able to pick from many types ranging from marble to soapstone counters depending on what you demand from your kitchen.

There are so many different options and styles available in regards to countertops that it can often be confusing. It can be quite difficult for a homeowner to decide on what type of countertops would be best for them. Would a soapstone countertop be more advantageous over Formica if you cook a lot, for example? There are a lot of questions to ask so don’t get frustrated. Try to have fun with it, instead and use the many resources available to help you with your decision.

There are actually a good amount of questions you need to ask before making a decision on the type of kitchen countertop you are considering before you even contact a contractor.  It is first suggested you put together a budget of what you would like to spend and what you can actually afford.  Think about how much you are willing to spend on materials and how much on labor. Does your kitchen get used frequently with a lot of cooking or is it more of a room for gathering?

Not only will the look of your countertops be of concern, but you will also need to figure out how you will be using the counter, what level of maintenance you will want, and what the cost will be. Think about the type of material you are looking to use. Do you prefer one which is high maintenance or easy maintenance? Now that you have established some of these answers you can then talk with your remodeling contractor about the specific details of the project.

Try to also take into consideration the idea of multiple soapstone countertops.  Not only is this a hot trend in interior design but it also is quite functional.

Before you begin any kitchen remodel project, talk over your options with your contractor since they probably have experience with the many different materials and styles commonly used.  You may be pleasantly surprised how easily they can create the type of look you want most.  If you are looking for a new look for your kitchen, start with a new soapstone countertop for a fabulous new look.
