Keeping Your Soapstone Fireplace Looking Its Very Best

March 22nd, 2009

You take a lot of pride in your soapstone fireplace. A beautiful and warm fireplace made from soapstone adds both warmth and style. Plus, it’s ability to retain and radiate heat makes soapstone the best choice over other natural stone or wood. Not only is it great in heating up your home and keeping heating bills down but it also looks so fantastic that it is an immediate focal point of the room. You’ll want to keep it looking beautiful all year long with proper care and maintenance and not just the winter months.

You will be very pleased to know that soapstone fireplaces and soapstone masonry heaters tend to require very little maintenance. This is yet one more reason why they are so popular in new homes. However, it is important that you purchase specialized mineral oil which is applied during the cleaning process. This mineral oil, which can be found in your local home improvement stores, helps to eliminate any dust and debris found on the external layer of the stone, but it is beneficial in many other ways as well.

Now that you have all of the proper tools and cleaning supplies, take that mineral oil and rub a thin layer of it on your soapstone masonry heater or fireplace. When maintaining the proper care for your soapstone fireplace, it is very important that you never use harsh chemicals to clean the stone. Not only do you run the risk of unrepairable damage, depending on the chemical but they can also result in uneven tones throughout the external surface of the fireplace.

The oil allows the soapstone will help bring out some of the stone’s more brilliant colors and finish as well as give the soapstone a darkening effect. Soapstone generally changes colors over time. This holds true for soapstone fireplaces, sinks and counters. The more the stone is aged, the darker it becomes. Rubbing a thin layer of the mineral oil to the surface layer of the fireplaces changes it into beautiful shades of dark blue, dark gray, dark green, and so forth. The best part is the soapstone fireplace will always remain beautiful for years to come.

Strong or harsh cleaning chemicals used on the surface can actually break down the thermal makeup of the soapstone fireplace. Also try not to use any rough materials to wipe down the surface of the stone. Items such as soft cloths and linens are only to be used when maintaining the proper care for your soapstone fireplaces. As you can see, it is really simple to care for soapstone – especially when it is a fireplace!

Hot New Interior Design Styles of 2009

March 16th, 2009

This is the year of change.  We changed presidents; some of us changed jobs or cities.  Why not change the décor of your home?  While many of us are facing uncertain economic times, that doesn’t mean we cannot redecorate our homes relatively inexpensively and yet create a brand new dramatic effect.  This could mean painting your walls different colors, adding new furniture or even adding a soapstone stove for the kitchen.

The recent financial crunch and falling house prices is impacting all of our lives in some way shape or form.  This can be seen in how people are decorating their homes in 2009. People are choosing to stay home more and getting more value for their home.  This means moving away from the bland to the bright.  Browns and beiges are being replaced with warming colors.  Try to find ways of injecting bold and cheerful colors like yellows and violets back into your otherwise drab rooms.

All the experts agree that emphasis this year is to make your home as comfortable and cozy as possible.  Most people don’t have the money to spend on eating out every night or even going to the movies once a weekend so they’ll be spending more time in the comforts of their home. The focal points will be gathering areas such as living rooms where everyone can spend time together and be entertained.  You’ll notice soapstone fireplaces and home entertainment centers are quite popular this year.

Furnishings are not the only changes being made.  So is the overall style of rooms.  As we mentioned earlier, rooms are now being filled with bright and warming colors.  It is fashionable to mix and match old trends alongside the new. Try adding pieces of antique furniture in the same room with less expensive furniture for a new look. In much the same manner, browse consignment shops to find pieces which can be a real steal for the price.  Place these next to genuine antiques or soapstone masonry heaters for an upbeat look.

The easy way to change up the feel of your homes rooms is to add new colors to every aspect.  This could mean painting the walls to a lighter and brighter shade.  Pick out a different color soapstone slab to replace the boring vinyl counter with a soapstone countertop.  Think about changing the window curtains or cushion covers for a slight change with a dramatic effect. Cushions and throws can  be used to re-vamp a sofa and chairs.

Building the Perfect Outside Patio of Your Dreams

March 9th, 2009
Outdoor Patio Design

Outdoor Patio Design

There is nothing more relaxing than sitting outside on a cool summer night enjoying a few laughs with friends and family alongside a soapstone fireplace. An outside patio on the back of your home makes this enjoyable scenario even more likely.  Patios are easier to set up and clean for guests, plus they make for a natural gathering area.  If you are in the market for a home with patio or thinking of adding one to your home, carefully plan out what you’ll need in materials, design, location, and ambiance.

A patio or outside deck is basically an extension of your home. During the planning stages, make sure the size, colors and decor of the deck matches or connects with the overall theme of your home. As you’re putting ideas together of what would make the perfect deck, begin shopping for materials like soapstone slabs or soapstone blocks, outdoor furniture, flowers, soapstone sinks, outdoor lights, and other decorations which you think would fit the overall look of the deck. For some ideas, you can always see what others are doing and what the latest trends are by reading home living magazines.

You should think about installing a roof or movable cover to protect you and your guests from unexpected weather conditions or simply as a shade to keep the sun out of your eyes.  Nothing can ruin an outdoor cookout more than a sudden thunderstorm.  Another popular piece of outdoor furniture for decks is soapstone slabs which serve as counter space for dishes and drinks.  The soapstone gives the deck a unique and natural look, plus it is strong enough to handle even the most severe outdoor conditions.

Your deck would be best served with a unique focal point which creates a pleasant ambiance for your guests to enjoy.  These focal points should be conversation pieces but not a distraction. Examples of commonly used focal points are soapstone fireplaces, fountains, a soapstone counter, a grotto and some sweet smelling flower gardens. Remember to keep your focal point in line with the overall design and feel of your patio, too.

Think of building a patio with touches of soapstone as part of the décor as an investment. Plan carefully, assess and consult experts in the design field and take your time with the construction of it. The best advice I can give is to not make any quick decisions.  While it may take a little longer than you want but knowing every step meets your needs will leaving you feeling quite satisfied with the outcome.
